Technology Assessment & Research (TA&R) Program

Project Number 546
Date of Summary September 13, 2006
Subject Chemical Dispersibility of OCS Crude Oils in Non-Breaking Waves, Part 1 Determining the Limiting Oil Viscosity for Dispersion in Non-Breaking
Performing Activity S.L. Ross Environmental Research Ltd.
Principal Investigator Dr. Ken Trudel, Mr. Randy Belore and Mr. Alun Lewis
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion Completed
Description Project will determine whether chemically treated low-viscosity OCS crude oils disperse in a non-breaking wave environmental and if so, to determine whether there is a limiting oil viscosity for chemical dispersion for OCS crude oils in non-breaking waves.

Related work is planned in an ExxonMobil sponsored project coordinated under the Petroleum Environmental Research Forum (PERF). Every effort will be made to coordinate the present study with PERF work. To this end, one of the model oils used in the ExxonMobil PERF study will be included in all phases of testing in the present study.

Progress Test oils have been identified and procured. Small wave tank tests will be conducted in June 2005. Large wave tanks tests were successfully conducted at Ohmsett from June 27-July 15, 2005. The final report has been accepted by MMS. This project is complete.
