Technology Assessment & Research (TA&R) Program

Project Number 296
Date of Summary December 7, 2004
Subject Chemical Response to Oil Spill: Ecological Effects Research Forum (CROSERF)
Performing Activity Ecosystem Management and Associates, Inc.
Principal Investigator Dr. Don Aurand, Ms. Gina Coelho
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion Complete
Description The Chemical Response to Oil Spills: Ecological Effects Research Forum (CROSERF) was organized in the Summer of 1994 to help coordinate and disseminate the research information oh dispersants funded by private industry (API, Exxon, Chevron, Marine Spill Response Corporation), state government agencies (AK, CA, FL, LA, TX, WA), federal government agencies (MMS, NOAA, EPA,) and Environment Canada. The forum was valuable in coordinating research, preventing unnecessary duplication and possible errors, and identifying data gaps to be addressed by different sponsoring agencies and organizations. In addition to the regular meetings, testing protocols developed were made available for unlimited distribution. Specific objectives of the forum include:
bullet Discussion and resolution of scientific issues related to ecological effects of chemicals used in oil spill response;
bullet To encourage the standardization of procedures involved in laboratory toxicity testing
bullet Fostering cooperative laboratory and mesocosm ecological research on issues surrounding the use of oil spill chemicals
bullet Encouraging the application of appropriate laboratory data, collected under realistic exposures scenarios, to the oil spill decision process; and
bullet Contributing to the development of appropriate risk assessment protocols.

Two reports were prepared by the CROSERF committee.

  1. Proceedings of the Seventh meeting of CROSERF which was held November 13 and 4,1997.

  2. CROSERF Laboratory Testing Integrated Research Plan.
Progress This project is complete.
