Technology Assessment & Research (TA&R) Program

Project Number 275
Date of Summary July 20, 2001
Subject Riser Reliability Analysis
Performing Activity Risk Engineering, Inc
Principal Investigator Dr. Gabriel T. Toro
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion July 2001
Description This JIP was formed to develop a preliminary model of riser reliability. The insights gained by this model will be used to generate a road-map for the development of a more refined model of riser reliability. The preliminary model will also allow the structure and location- specific reliability results, which will be useful in the evaluation of the reliability inherent in current designs. The study originally planned to consider both a TLP production riser and a drilling riser, each in 1000 meters of water. Participants later added a steel caternary riser (SCR) serving a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit. The study will use data from the Ram-Powell project for the TLP portion of the study. Five different zones in the riser will be evaluated (tensioner assembly, lower stress joint, a joint near the wave zone, a connector near the wave zone, and a connector near the bottom).

The SCR phase of the project was delayed in order for the study to benefit from the results of the HCR riser JIP (Project No. 305 - all participants in this JIP also participate in the HCR riser JIP).

Progress The final report is completed.
