Technology Assessment & Research (TA&R) Program

Project Number 242
Date of Summary June 15, 2001
Subject Retrofit Cathodic Protection of Marine Pipelines Associated with Petroleum Production
Performing Activity Florida Atlantic University
Principal Investigator Dr. William H. Hartt
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion Complete
Description Development of a model or models that will provide criteria for cathodic protection retrofits for offshore pipelines. The project would be based on recently developed relationships between cathodic protection potential and electric current density for sacrificially protected steel in sea water. The results could serve as a recommended practice of specification.
Progress A workshop was held in conjunction with project #243 in Galveston, TX on Feb 7-10, 1999.

Scope was modified to include not only a method for accurate design of pipeline CP retrofits but also new builds. This project was completed August 2001. Work will continue with industry direction for the development of a field document for engineering use.
