Technology Assessment & Research (TA&R) Program

Project Number 171
Date of Summary December 31, 1993
Subject International Workshop on the Seismic Design and Requalification of Offshore Platforms
Performing Activity California Institute of Technology
Principal Investigator Dr. William Iwan
Contracting Agency U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park
Estimated Completion Completed
Description The objective was to conduct an international workshop on the design and requalification of offshore platforms. The workshop assessed the current state-of- the-practice and determined future research needs to close gaps in technology. The workshop discussed:
  1. methods used to make an assessment of the site seismicity and other characteristics of potential seismic sources;

  2. methods used to predict strong ground motions, including the effects of basin geometry;

  3. methods used to estimate the dynamic response of the structure/foundation/soil system to account for nonlinear effects; and

  4. methods used to calculate the dynamic response and behavior of various operational elements mounted on the structure.
Progress Complete. Approximately 175 people attended the international workshop. The proceedings were published in December, 1993.
