Technology Assessment & Research (TA&R) Program

Project Number 147
Date of Summary June 30, 1991
Subject Method for Predicting Hydrodynamic Damping for Offshore Structures
Performing Activity University of Mississippi
Principal Investigator Dr. Thomas E. Horton
Contracting Agency Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory
Estimated Completion Complete
Description The objective was to develop improved damping parameters and methods of representing the effects of damping for the analysis and verification of deep water platforms. The MMS was one of six other participants in this Joint Industry Project (JIP) to improve present practice through use of an alternative to the Morrison equation, called the Inertial Pressure Method (IPM).
Progress Complete. The results of this investigation provided a basis for future studies in the area of controlled damping (active and passive), such as enhanced damping cycle to reduce loads and fatigue effects on the structure.
