Technology Assessment & Research (TA&R) Program

Project Number 48
Date of Summary March 31, 1987
Subject A Study of Structural and Geotechnical Aspects of Tension Leg Platforms
Performing Activity Sandia National Laboratory
Principal Investigator Mr. Paul Hommert
Contracting Agency Department of Energy
Estimated Completion Completed
Description To study designs of tension-leg platforms (TLP); to understand how platform foundations interact with the soil to influence the stability and reliability of the platform; to identify research topics and to initiate work on topics identified as being critical.
Progress Completed. The final reports were received. This work concerned laboratory and large scale field tests of driven pile under cyclic tension loads. The project scope was extended to include drilled and grouted piles under cyclic tension loads. The initial phase of the project consisted of an assessment of the current state-of-the-practice for drilled and grouted piles.
