Technology Assessment & Research (TA&R) Program

Project Number 33
Date of Summary March 31, 1984
Subject Vibration Monitoring of Offshore Structures
Performing Activity The Aerospace Corporation
Principal Investigator Dr. Sheldon Rubin
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion Complete
Description This was a joint Industry Project (JIP). Frequency monitoring was applied to the Nondestructive Examination Method `Round Robin` (see Project No. 34). This program evaluated the applicability of several promising methods for locating structural failures. Projects Nos. 23 and 41 were also evaluated. Experiments were run on a 14 foot, four-legged jacket platform model at the NASA facility at Goddard. A new concept was developed called the Flexibility Monitoring Technique (FMT). The concept circumvents measuring harmonic frequencies necessary in conventional monitoring techniques. The new method takes advantage of the basic shear beam behavior of a fixed offshore platform. It has been evaluated on the `Round Robin` model, and several experiments will be conducted fixed platforms in the field.
