Sperm Whale Seismic
Study (SWSS)
The Summer Breeze
The
Summer Breeze is a chartered
Hunter 46 sailboat out of St Petersburg, Florida. She is conducting a “Mesoscale
Population Study Cruise” (PDF file) from June 9 to August 3, 2005 as
part of SWSS. Mesoscale is jargon for an intermediate scaled
observation of whales between highly detailed digital-tag studies
literally recording every whale movement over several hours and the
broad scale satellite-tracking of whales up to 18-months showing whale
surface locations once or twice a day. The sailboat will quietly track
a group of whales over several days. This is the second Mesoscale
Cruise and is under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Gordon (University of
St. Andrews, Scotland), Dr. Bernd Würsig (Texas A&M University), and Dr.
Christoph Richter (Queens University, Canada).
