Readout From BOEMRE
Director Bromwich's Meeting with BP Senior Executives
WASHINGTON, DC
– Bureau of Ocean
Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE)
Director Michael R. Bromwich met today with BP senior
executives, including Chief Operating Officer Doug
Suttles and Vice President of Operations Richard
Morrison. The meeting was to brief Director Bromwich on
the details of BP's report, "Deepwater Horizon
Containment and Response: Harnessing Capabilities and
Lessons Learned." The report was requested by Director
Bromwich at a meeting with Suttles and other BP senior
executives on August 5, 2010.
The meeting, one of
many such discussions that have been and will continue
to be held with industry representatives, technical
experts, academics, conservation groups and other
stakeholders following the Deepwater Horizon incident,
focused on lessons learned thus far
from BP's containment and response efforts.
BOEMRE will
share the report with other officials in the Department
of the Interior, as well as other appropriate federal
agencies within the Administration. Director Bromwich
and department staff will continue to seek additional
information and clarification as they carefully review
BP's report. These discussions are part of BOEMRE’s
ongoing work to evaluate current deepwater drilling
safety, containment and response procedures as it works
to strengthen all aspects of offshore regulation.
In his July 12, 2010,
decision regarding the current 6-month suspension on
deepwater drilling, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar asked
Director Bromwich to engage in a series of fact finding
meetings and public forums to gather information about
deepwater drilling safety reforms, well containment, and
oil spill response. The Director will use this
information to deliver recommendations to the Secretary
regarding any appropriate modifications to the scope or
duration of the suspensions currently scheduled to last
until November 30.
